Generally, our prices are targeted within a fair percentage range of market value. What this means is that each book is valued at a rate that will neither reward other book dealers with a quick, profitable resale, nor demand that the buyer take on an unreasonable amount of risk in losing capital within a five year appreciation window.
As a very solid rule, comic books persistently increase in value. Strong upward price trends dominate the market, despite short-lived dips over brief eras. Moreover, books possessing rarity and resonance are sure bets against significant depreciation. Obsessing over the meager spread of today’s prices seems to be unwise, when what is certain as certain can be is that within a few years a solid vintage book will benefit to the tune of at least double inflationary rates (at worst). For this reason alone, we at Toronto Vintage Comics are in no special hurry to please those pecuniary acrobats who derive pleasure in the quick flip.
In our experience, most of the pushy price haggle does not come from collectors with a passion for vintage books and an orientation toward buy-and-hold practices; rather, other dealers looking for sure short term profit tend to want to argue in their wallet’s favor. Yet time and time again, there has proven to be no benefit in NOT buying a book within a reasonable range of market value. Even other dealers wouldn’t argue against that truth.
And let’s focus on these intertwined notions of passion and profit for a moment, especially as related to the nerves every collector feels when something surely wanted will surely cost. We’d like to assuage your hesitation with a benevolent interrogation: how many endeavours do you engage in that allow you to experience pleasure while enjoying a profit margin that not only insulates against complete loss of capital but includes the very real possibility that the exercise of these golden and silver age desires will prove financially profitable? I mean, you can chase the girl, the latest tech, the great getaway, or the perfect Sauternes – but you will pay for it outright and right down to your pocket’s thread, with recompense several wishes away from reality. Vintage comic books, however, have a wonderful ability to pay their ride, offering real rewards far surpassing the sweet moment you obtain that longingly awaited issue.
If Toronto Vintage Comics has something you really, really want, let’s chat: amicably, thouroughly, and in adherence to an equanimity we all endeavor to maintain.
Yours from the pulp-pit,
